seeing the bridge that morning

how can i tell you?

it was like
seeing through
time itself

like stepping into
a snowy wardrobe

or falling through
a looking glass

"Alice began to think that very few things were indeed impossible."
~Lewis Carroll, Through the Looking Glass

Susan, about lucy: She thinks she has found a magical land...in the upstairs wardrobe.
Professor Kirke: (eyes widening) WHAT did you say?
Peter: Um, the wardrobe upstairs. Lucy thinks she's found a forest inside.
Susan: She won't stop going on about it.
Professor Kirke: What was it like?
Susan: Like talking to a lunatic.
Professor Kirke: No, no, no. Not her. The forest.
Susan stares: You're not saying you believe her?
Professor Kirke: You don't?
Susan: But of course not. I mean logically it's impossible.
Professor Kirke: What do they teach in school these days?
~C.S. Lewis, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

*There is a bridge called "faith" that some can barely fathom, taking those who dare cross, into a whole new world. :)

observing the falls, a two part poem

like grief (part one)

i saw niagara
last week

i heard her roar

and tiny were the  birds
swooping near the bottom
while her waters
rushed over
and

over

Grief has to be worked through.  It is like walking through water.  Sometimes there are little waves lapping about my feet.  Sometimes there is an enormous breaker that knocks me down.  Sometimes there is a sudden an fierce squall.  But I know that many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it."
~Madeline L Engle

*Those tiny little birds at the bottom of the falls were inspiring. They kept flying in and out of the spray, in and out of the roar, in and out…..

like comfort (part 2)

later that week
in the catskills
we found
a small
cascade

called
mine kill falls

mine
kill?

but she
was gentle

smoothing jagged rocks
into soft round stones

and in her quiet way
she kept coming
and coming
too

small decision?

that day,
being tired and low
i decided to go
to the rose garden

and there
spilling out
in the cool of the morning

were petals
upon petals
upon petals

"Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts.  There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature, the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter."

along the road

what is it
about berries
in fall?

the bittersweet sight
of the bittersweet

the hawthorne's
welcome home

"Everything is restless until it comes home."  ~John Bate

*Recently I have been re-reading the story of the prodigal son. I am reminded again that we have a Father who watches and waits for us; who runs out to meet us and welcomes us home.

if only

wouldn't we like to
solve
everything

make a small bird
always
safe

let a nothing girl
know
she is not nothing

turn back
the rushing
waters

we too, weep,
looking out on our own
jerusalems

Thinking today of all the people in and around Houston. "If only...."

"As He approached Jerusalem and saw the city, He wept over it."  ~Luke 19:41

interrupting the routine

i left the laundry behind
and the pickleball
games

traded them
for dew on leaves
dragonfly wings
and the garden’s other
offerings

i drank eagerly
of her cup

juice of zinnias
dripping down
my chin

the leaves of yesterday

the curve of them
catches my
eye

their lines
and
shadows

their
calm and quiet
passing
