august afternoon miracles

yesterday
i took an afternoon walk

i felt a cool breeze
on my face
and saw white clouds
in a blue sky

i heard crows, turkey,
and tiny creatures
like locusts and frogs

i smelled freshly mown
hay

my feet and legs carried me
up a hill and
back down

i breathed
in
and out

all of these things happened

they
really did

"The most incredible things about miracles is that they happen."
                                                                      -  C.S. Lewis

pondering faith along I 70

somewhere along
the journey

we begin to realize
the truth we've believed
but never really known

"life on earth
is but a vapor"

indeed

sadness indwells
the quickening

but while days
blur into decades

something called hope
rises from the earth
like trees from prairie grass

we hear it in the carefree laughter of children
we see it
in the forgiving eyes of the old

astonishingly
it is our daily privilege
to take hold of it
or let it

go

"Faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see."
