pumpkins

six litttle pumpkins sitting in a pew
if, by magic, they could move
whatever would
they do?

play tag
roll around the block
check out the stock
market?

maybe they would do a dance
swirling and twirling
till they melted into a pool
of orange goo

if you were a pumpkin
tell me true
what would
you do?

*"I like nonsense. It wakes up the brain cells. Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living. It's a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope, which is what i do. And that enables you to laugh at life's realities."                 ~Theodore Geisel (Dr. Seuss)

autumn leaves

how do you like
their shade of  brown

the sound of their crackling?

the musty smell of
them?

what, oh what
does your soul undergo
in the mysterious season
of autumn

*"Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if i were a bird i would fly about the earth seeking successive autumns."       ~George Eliot

politics

you go your way
i'll go mine
with our heads held high

we dare not
“gander”
into a world

of humility

what if we lost our way
back out?!

trees

they are living
living
living things

*No town can fail of beauty, though its walks were gutters and its houses hovels, if venerable trees make magnificent colonnades along its streets.                    ~ Henry Ward Beecher

corn art

i've discovered a new
art gallery

as of late
i've been making trips most every morning
to the corn field

harvest is past
and for the most part
the lovely stocks and shucks
are gone

but on the edges of the field
i see the most amazing
designs
and lines

reminders

that the artist
lives on

yes, every time i go
i see a new
piece

and it becomes
my
favorite

october glory

and for this
who shall get the
thanks

who shall get
the glory?

how many trees
and leaves this day
shall we pass by
without a thought or
sigh

we turn easily to God
in our pain
but where do we vain
creatures go

and what do we do

with this terrible
terrible beauty?

heading home

thank you God
for this one
alone

heading home

calm
resolute
and strong

* One of my favorite things about this time of the year is the spectacular sight of the geese migration. Something about seeing a flock, a pair, or one alone, flying high, thrills my heart.

camera

we've come so far
in the past few years

taking pictures with our phones
and they
the size of our shirt pockets

do you remember
opening the film
putting it in
then winding to load

attaching the flash when necessary

what you shot
was what you got

i like my canon rebel
i like that i can erase
my mistakes

but doesn't this little kodak
have class!

found jar

when you find
something

do you wonder
where it was
before?

and through what doors
it passed
into your presence

when you find
something

do you ever stop
in
wonder?

morning invitation

oh come!
walk with me this morning
we'll kick up leaves
and listen to the cry of geese
on wing

we'll breathe deep
of smoky air
and magical musty
autumn

dew on the pumpkin

God said "let there be light"
and sometime after that
He must have said
"let there be pumpkins
and let them be orange"

and "let them be seen
right before the chill
of winter"

*This post is dedicated to Lincoln Reader who requested a pumpkin image. He is getting very excited about dressing up for Halloween. Be sure and send me a picture of you in your costume Lincoln! Happy Fall day everyone.

holy battle

    flee oh darkness
    the sun has come

    flee far
               far
                    away

   * What wonderful news that the miners in Chile are seeing the sun at last! Their rescue this morning brings a passage from Psalms 139 to mind:

"Whither shall i go from your spirit? If i ascend to heaven you are there.
If i make my bed in the depths of the earth, you are there....

If I say, "let only darkness cover me,
and the light about me be night,
even the darkness is not dark to thee,
the night is bright as the day:
for darkness is as light with thee."

life under heaven

and as one man
pushes in the clutch
and heads to an office
high in the sky

another shuffles barefoot
through the desert dust
carrying bricks
of mud and dung

and what is going through
their minds
as the go about their day?

pilgrims
in the same
great story

* I just finished a telephone conversation with my husband who is on a mission trip in Southern Sudan. He is helping with the final phase of a medical clinic construction project. (He is building cabinets.) It was wonderful to hear the humble awe in his voice as he spoke of the various experiences he was having there among the people. We truly are connected with fellow "travelers" all over the world, however various our backgrounds and circumstances. (Quite amazing, really.)

scene in the shipyard

life is best lived
with both
unbreakable strength
and soft tenderness
of mercy

* "The first week at August's was a consolation, a pure relief. The world will give you that once in a while, a brief time-out; the boxing bell rings and you go to your corner, where somebody dabs mercy on your beat-up life."  ~Sue Monk Kidd (From The Secret Life of Bees)

morning reflection

have you ever wondered
why God made water
reflective

He didn't have to

it could have been
black
thick
sludge

it could have been churning
constantly

and burning
rather than
cool

but then
when could

"He leads beside still
waters"
have ever been
true

beach rocks

small ones
sweet
lying in the sand

could it have been
the hand of Almighty God

who set you here this morning

just for
me?

that a piece of wood
lying on a piece of metal

could be so
beautiful?

seeds and shingles

once upon a time
there was nothing
here

but someone had a vision
took hammer in hand

seed was scattered

and here i stand
relishing the scene

years
years and
years later

solitary rock at sunrise

to think

she sits there for days
and no eye sees
the rays of soft dawn
on her
as the waves
wash over

through countless nights
when none behold
the blue moon's light
upon her

surely
the sun and moon rise
on a beauty

that is
