a humble clay pot

what is it about you
i find
so beautiful?

why do you evoke
such emotion
in me?

The garden shop was filled with colorful  mums and bright shiny containers but it was this lone empty pot that stood out to me.

partaking

the table is set

come, let us taste
of autumn's abundance

Love of beauty is taste. The creation of beauty is art.

exiting and entering

leaving the safety
of sweet mother's womb
you entered the world
tiny grandson

to see, hear,
taste and
feel

all things new

After meeting sweet Griffin Davis, we left the hospital to pick up his big brother Graham. Just a few blocks down the street i noticed this beautiful entrance to a park. We had time to “exit” the street we were on and “enter” what turned out to be a magical place. The colors and feel of fall were present in exceeding abundance. Who would have known such a place existed right off the busy byway. Ah yes, there are times in our life when we need to “exit” what has become normal to experience something more than we dare imagine.

"Every exit is an entrance somewhere else. "    anon.

*The photo of Griffen was taken by his beautiful mother, Denise.

The park we visited is Antioch Park in Kansas City.

october wish

would it were
that changes in me
could be like those
of the maple tree

in autumn

sunrise in morning fog

when heavy fog
is due
i rise early

moved by mystery
and the gradual unveiling
that makes common things
new

it never seems to fail
that i am changed too

as night gives way

“I find it particularly exciting when a picture evokes anything near that word, ‘mystery’.” – Jeff Mermelstein

autumns green

another rainy day calls
 “come!
come out!”

without  a doubt
i accept the invitation
expecting myriads of color

and am not disappointed
it IS october after all

the brightest, boldest
most energetic
of months

but today there seems
a reluctance in the woods
to surrender the power
of green’s
serene

presence

"Green is the prime color of the world, and that from which its loveliness arises." ~Pedro Calderon de la Barca

surprised as i was by green today
i know nature will soon give way
to the yellows, browns, and reds
and we will all be blessed by autumns warmth

for a little while

then winter white
will round the bend
but shortly thereafter rescind
to green
again

"Nature gives to every time and season some beauties of its own; and from morning to night, as from the cradle to the grave, it is but a succession of changes so gentle and easy that we scarcely mark their progress."   ~Charles Dickens

in memory

you have gone home
my friend
never again
to suffer pain
or sorrow

thank you
for helping me see
by your life and
your death
that faith will
carry one through
to

a new dawn
a new day

Yesterday morning at 8:30 i was in Kansas City lifting my 2 year old grandson from his crib to greet the new day. At the same time my dear friend Linda Young was lifted by her heavenly Father from the bed she lay in at Midland Hospice House. She was taken from a world under blanket of darkness into the light and glory of an eternal new day.  I am saddened but grateful.

"It is always good to know if only in passing, a charming human being; it refreshes our lives like flowers and woods and clear brooks. " ~George Eliot

I was blessed to know Linda more than “in passing”. Oh, how she refreshed me. I hope you have someone in your life that you can say the same of. Perhaps even today you can let them know that they are like a “clear gurgling brook” in your life.

in her wake

autumn steals across the land
expanding me
with her
color

"Methinks I see the sunset light flooding the river valley, the western hills stretching to the horizon, overhung with trees gorgeous and glowing with the tints of autumn--a mighty flower garden, blossoming under the spell of the enchanter, Frost..."~John Greenleaf Whittier, "Pantucket Falls"

autumn thunderstorm

it’s raining in t. town today

trees bend and sway
as thunder roars

and sheets of rain pour diagonally
across my view

the thirsty prairie breathes a sigh
and i again remember why

i love these days

fragrance, coolness, surprise
all send my heart reeling

stealing the harshness of drought
and the doubt

that all will be well
again

An Addendum:
Why even the city streets shine
under the rains sublime refreshment!

aquaintances or pals?

i like to think of them
meeting every morning
about the same time
say a quarter til nine

chatting 'bout the weather
the neighborhood
and whether they would rather
hunt alone
or together that day

yes, i’m sure of it

they are buddies, mates
friends
call it what you may
they each make the other’s day

better

found art

on this rainy day
plans change
and i find myself
in alleyways

hunting
for masterpieces
not planned by man

the work of wind
water
time

and soon i am whispering a sigh
for what is
beyond

abundance
