it's two degrees
wind gusting at thirty miles per hour
from my kitchen window
i count six cardinals tucked tightly in the pines
a stunning sight
as snow swirls round about
I was thinking the other day about how much more I appreciate cardinals in the winter. Probably due to the greater contrast of their color against the brown or white that surrounds them instead of being one of many in a colorful garden or a flock of summer birds of other bright colors. They haven't changed, but their surroundings have. Like blessings recognized in a dry time; like an encouraging word from a friend when the way is not clear.
