sounds of the sumac

the sumac leaves are beginning to turn
though it's only mid july
and the chill of autumn
weeks away

scattered amidst all the green
and so few
like scouts sent
to spy out
the dry lands of summer

i hear them
this sultry, sweltering day
announcing
with stunning conviction

a new world
coming
