sometimes
i imagine living
in a simpler time

a small town
where i would ride my bike
down to the
diner

for a cup of coffee and a muffin

i would chat with the fishermen
before they went out
to cast their nets
into the briny sea

oh the blessed gifts
of water, wind, and sky
of human touch

the maze of overthinking

i found a spoon
in a tree

and it wasn't me
who put it there

there was a drop of rain
on the spoon
that was in the tree
that was in the ground

that happened to be
around
the corner of the qwik shop

from which i had wandered
away
while my husband stayed
to top off the truck
with gas

and what is the meaning
of this tiny tale
of the spoon in the tree?

what makes a tomato turn red?
my huband asked over lunch on the deck
eyeing his green ones on the vine

sun, time
weather
whatever makes a banana turn yellow
i said

same things
that if allowed
replace our hard and proud
hearts

with a humbleness

hard
